The Kettlewell weekend
was a reminder that Backpackers should not be unduly concerned
by a bad weather forecast. The Friday had been a day of
torrential rain throughout Britain with flooding and road closures
on the A1
with the forecast for the weekend being not much better. As it
turned out
Saturday had a few showers while the Sunday was largely clear. The
route took us via Arnfield, Malham Tarn, Malham Cove pitching near Weet Hill
which is not far from Goredale Scar and
back via Grassington and the Dales Way, a route in the region of 26
miles.

The future of Backpacking.
This is a Tarptent
imported from the USA and weighing approximately 1.5 lbs. This is a very
versatile tent which uses a walking pole as a tent pole. It has been used in
some demanding weather.
Also in the picture can be seen a light weight
conical meths burning stove which weighs about 150 gms!!! The basic weight
of the pack comes in at a remarkable 14.5 lbs.
In the background can be seen the new version of the Terra Nova Solar
2, a two person tent which weighs in at 2.2 Kg.
