Welcome to our web site

The Backpackers Club has active groups in most regions of the United Kingdom. Our members come from all walks of life & consist of families & men & women of all ages. New & prospective members of all abilities & aspirations are always welcome. The Backpackers Club has members in the North-east of England, with a hardcore of between eight & ten who meet once a month in the bar of The Bridge pub in Newcastle. The Bridge can be found on the north end of the High Level Bridge by the old Newcastle Keep.  These informal get-togethers take place on the first Tuesday of every month from about 8pm.

If you want to know what some of us look like so you can find us easier click here. If you are interested in backpacking you are welcome to join us.  At these meetings we usually plan our trip for the coming month.  We may decide to attend one of the weekends in the Backpackers Club diary or alternatively organise one of our own. On a typical weekend we camp Friday night on a  small farm campsite (hopefully near a pub!) where we can leave the cars, then camp wild on the Saturday night returning back on the Sunday. We backpack all year round & also have some members into cross-country ski-touring.

For more detail on what happens at a typical club meet click here for a useful article from the Backpackers Club national diary co-ordinator - Tony Wilson.

The definition of a backpacker has changed in the UK & Europe over the years.  It now often defines someone who travels (mostly in a gap year) with a rucsac to distant countries, usually travelling by plane, train or bus & using cheap hostels for accommodation.
In the USA, where the term originates, backpacking is an activity that involves walking & lightweight camping in mountain or wilderness areas, carrying everything you need on your back such as tent, sleeping bag, stove, food etc.  This is the type of backpacking we do.
